Read-a-thons are a fantastic way to reinforce good reading habits, and to increase the amount of time our students spend reading. This month long event encourages reading, which is the backbone for success in all subjects. It also encourages students to read at or above their current reading level, and to take advantage of enjoyable reading selections.
Children in grades kindergarten through 3rd are learning the fundamentals and proficiency in reading needed to thrive the rest of their educational career. Students fourth grade and higher are no longer taught how to read, but use reading to learn other subjects and aspects of life.
Did you know that part of the criteria that goes into the decision making of when to build a prison is based upon the third grade reading scores of our young people? Meaning, that if students are not reading on level by third grade, their chances of imprisonment increases. This is why Read-a-thons and other programs as such, are an excellent vehicle to develop good reading habits.

Summer is fast approaching to the end, and this is just a reminder that our Opening Convocation, an event that meshes our new student orientation, returning student informational and meet the teachers, will be on Friday, August 17.
Convocation will be held at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, located at 3015 North MacGregor Way, Houston, TX 77004.
The first day of school is Monday, August 20.
During this event, important information will be distributed to all students. School t-shirts, physical education uniforms, and school patches will also be sold at the convocation.
This session will lay the foundation for our vision, mission and new focus to carry into action. We require each BMI parent and student to attend. Information received during convocation is especially beneficial in order to review the expectations and standards set for the academic year. We look forward to seeing you and your student(s), as we embark on another superb school year.
BMI creates a learning environment where learning is occurring more spontaneously. The learning environment is more active than the traditional classroom, providing each child with opportunities to focus on individual learning experiences.
The mission of the Beatrice Mayes Institute Charter School is “to develop learners who are competent, confident, productive and responsible young adults, who possess the habits, skills and attitudes needed to succeed in high school, post secondary education and become productive members of society. This mission seeks to develop an educated
citizenry for the 21st century, characterized by such traits as curiosity, lifelong learning creativity, facility with technology and the ability to communicate across disciplines, using a variety of media.
The Beatrice Mayes Institute is a state-funded school consisting of grades kindergarten through eight and is fully accredited by the Southern Association of College anSchools.
At BMI, we believe that “What you teach, teach thoroughly.” On this basis the curriculum is built around the four core areas of science, mathematics, language arts, and social studies, with commitment to the development of lifelong skills of learning across these domains.
